Warwick woman's $2500 haircut

A BRAVE choice and a need to speak out for mental health has seen Warwick businesswoman Paula West shave her head in the name of a great local cause.

On Friday night, surrounded by friends, supporters and wellwishers, Mrs West lost her locks and raised $2500 for headspace in the process.

"I really wanted to raise some awareness of mental health, I think it's something that always needs addressing,” she said.

"Headspace is an amazing local organisation, doing wonderful work within our community, trying to stem the flow of mental health issues in young people before they become worse.

"I've had family and friends who have taken their own lives and this issue is really dear to my heart.

"I think it happens a lot more than we realise and having the courage to speak up is so important.”

Mrs West said people could find it hard to stand up and ask for help.

"But they need to know the help is there,” she said.

"Especially at places like headspace and other health providers around Warwick.”

Mrs West said she had approached businesses around town to support her cause.

"What was really great was the amount of businesses contacting me looking to donate, telling me their stories and wanting to be a part of what I was doing.

"That was really special and shows how far-reaching mental health issues are with the community.”

As for the shaving itself, Mrs West said it was a relief.

"I wasn't nervous at all, I knew completely what I was doing,” she said.

"And when it was done, it was really quite rewarding to have everyone clapping, there was a lot of support and I appreciate it all so much.”

Mrs West said there were many local people and businesses to thank for their donations.

"And to all the 77 ticket buyers, friends, family, everyone that attended, those that donated or bought a raffle or put a bid on for the silent auction, thank you all so much.”
