Warwick young blood digs deep for drought relief

ONE YOUNG Warwick local is reaching out in a big way to help the drought relief for Longreach.

James Lascelles-King is in grade 6 at Scots PGC College and raised a whopping $425 for the Longreach community.

"He decided to hold a raffle and he put it all together himself," said James' father, Richard King.

James took to the track to sell tickets at the horse trials held over the March 7 and 8 weekend.

"His mum helped him out with some of the prizes but he sold all of the tickets over the day of the Warwick Horse Trials earlier in the month."

Mr King said James was inspired to fundraise after a couple of girls gave a talk at his school.

"It obviously struck a chord with him," Mr King said of his son's efforts.

"Where we are in Yangan we have to get water for our horses, and he's always cared for animals."

"I think he thought about how bad it would be for us to be without water for our animals and decided to help out the people in Longreach who are struggling without water."

Mr King says that, while James hasn't been involved in fundraising before now, he hasn't ruled anything out for the future.

"He always has half an interest in how people are affected by things," he said.

"He hasn't said anything yet, but I think if the opportunity arose he certainly might be interested in doing something again."

Whether James continues his charity work or not, there's no doubt he's made his parents proud.

"James really likes helping and doing things for people," Mr King said.

"We're very proud and it's a great support for this community."

The funds raised will go towards the Community Disaster Relief Van (CDRV) which is giving relief to the drought-stricken region.
