Warwick's national rodeo queen hopeful leads charity charge
WHILE the rodeo and fireworks were the main attractions at the Warwick Showgrounds on New Year's Eve, Warwick's royalty did its part for a charity group.
Ashleigh Grant, the 2016 Warwick Rodeo Queen, has Blush Cancer Care as her charity of choice as she ramps up her Miss Rodeo Australia bid, and the fundraising effort was in full effect at the weekend.
Miss Grant said the choice of Blush was one close to her heart.
"A couple of years ago mum was unexpectedly diagnosed,” Miss Grant said.
"They showed her such great support during her appointments, treatment and surgery. It's such a great thing to have access to.
"They are not-for-profit and solely run by volunteers. They solely work in the southeast and southwest area of Queensland, which means they work with a lot of people diagnosed in Warwick.
"For more people to have access to this would make it a little easier for them.”
Throughout the day, Miss Grant, along with other rodeo queen participants, made her way around the showground to raise money in a 50/50 raffle for the group.
"All of our current queens were really helpful,” she said.
"A lot came and helped me sell raffle tickets. It's amazing how many people bought tickets, as well as a few people giving donations.
"Living in a small community, we all get behind each other.
"The total from the raffle was $1400, meaning $700 will go into the pool which at the end will go to Blush Cancer Care.”
Earlier in the day, Miss Grant staged a campdraft at the venue, paying tribute to the efforts of volunteers throughout Warwick Rodeo week in October.
"It was a chance for volunteers who worked so tirelessly at the Warwick Rodeo to have a run,” she said.
"Many of them worked so hard during the rodeo they didn't get a chance to compete. We had a really great response with 111 runs for the morning.
"It ran really smoothly, and a lot of competitors said it would be great if it happened more often.
"A lot of horses are spelling at this time, so it was good to see so many people come and compete.”
Now Miss Grant's attention will turn to the Miss Rodeo Australia judging, held in Warwick on January 19-20.
"I might do another $100 board. I will do further studying, finishing speeches and getting ready before judging day,” she said.
"Thompson Longhorn have helped me boost my fundraising efforts, and I'd like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout this time.”
