Warwick’s needy and homeless need blankets ASAP

WITH winter grasping the Southern Downs in its icy clutch, the region's homeless need help more than ever.

During the colder months, those without a roof over their heads or adequate bedding are freezing and the generosity of the Warwick community is in demand.

Fiori Cruz, President of the St Mary's Conference of St Vincent de Paul said the society's Cornerstone program is on the front line of the fight against homelessness and poverty in Queensland communities.

"The Cornerstone program helps people with food assistance, furniture, clothing, blankets, basically anything that we sell in the shop," she said.

"Right at the moment however, we're in desperate need of as much warm bedding and blankets as we can get.

"If anyone has any of these items they are willing donate please bring them to the Cornerstone Program office at 44 Grafton St, right next to the shop."

Ms Cruz said this would ensure they get where they are needed immediately.

"We are the only crisis walk-in centre in Warwick," she said.

"Our ladies in the office here will see people on the spot, assess their needs on the spot and assist where necessary.

"There is an issue with homelessness in Warwick and it will generally stem from loss of employment, physical or mental health issues and various forms of addiction.

"And sometimes people simply don't have family to fall back on, they may have exhausted that avenue or might be far from home."

Ms Cruz said the Cornerstone staff take a holistic approach to solving people's problems.

"We look at why they're in trouble and try to fix those issues," she said.

"We can then refer people on to special services for further help to get rid of the root of the problem.

"We walk with people every step of the way and we take the steps they want to take.

"Right now though, the step we need to take is to keep people warm."
