Warwick's public vapers to be banished

FROM July Warwick's e-cigarette users will no longer be able to smoke in public places including shopping centres, cinemas, libraries, trains, buses, public swimming pools, parks, sports grounds and outdoor dining areas, bringing laws into line with those already affecting smokers of conventional cigarettes.

While the relatively new trend in smoking alternatives hasn't taken off here in the Rose City, smokers and vapers alike aren't surprised about the incoming laws.

Trish Dempsey has been smoking most of her life and has tried vaping as a way of cutting down on the rising cost of cigarettes.

"I do understand why they want the separation, a lot has changed over the years,” she said.

"Once upon a time you could smoke anywhere and everywhere, but today so many more people are more health conscious.

"I do think that if you're in an open area, it shouldn't be a problem to anyone, but some people don't like the smell and others are concerned about the health impacts on themselves and children.”

Mrs Dempsey wasn't convinced about the government's motives however, with significant fines proposed for anyone caught breaking the new laws.

"It's all a cash grab,” she said.

"If the government were so concerned about public health, they'd have banned smoking in all forms altogether.

"We smokers and vapers are only hurting ourselves, I'd have thought the government and police would be more concerned with the more anti-social behaviours going on.”

Warwick's Cignall tobacconist manager Brodie Gavin said smokers were moving to e-cigarettes to avoid the costs associated with smoking.

"Other people who come into the store are using vapes to try to quit smoking altogether.

"It works for some and others seem to go back to smoking after a while. I don't really mind people smoking around me, but clearly others do, so I can see why these laws are coming into effect.”
