Warwick’s Team of the Century among legends

RUGBY LEAGUE: Six legends of Warwick rugby league are in the running for the two second-row positions in the Warwick Rugby League Team of the Century.

There are 43 nominations selected by a committee from more than 250 names.

The Team of the Century will be announced at the May 17 Centenary Dinner at St Mary's Hall.

Paddy Windle played for Eastern Suburbs and representative footy galore in the 1970s.

Jack Jones was an outstanding back-rower for Suburbs and also coached the Hornets.

Tony Watson was part of the inaugural Warwick Cowboys TRL winning A-grade side in 1987 and was again in the winning team in 1998.

He now runs a business at Warrill View.

Sid "Porky" Jones played rugby union and rugby league for Queensland and Bulimba Cup for Ipswich.

Ray Higgs was captain-coach of Eastern Suburbs after moving to the town after playing for Queensland and Australia.

Alan "Blondie" Bell is one of the legends of the Collegians club and was rated in his day as a player capable of playing for Australia if given the opportunities now available in the professional era.

Texas product Terry Saunders, a halfback, played for Eastern Suburbs and was selected for the first State of Origin, but was ruled out with injury. He will travel from Yeppoon for the celebrations.

Killarney forward Rohan Hancock was in the first Origin game and is nominated for the front row.

Newcastle Knights coach Wayne Bennett is one of the nominees for fullback after playing for Warwick, Toowoomba, Queensland and Australia at fullback or on the wing.

Centenary organiser Glen Whitton said invitations were being sent to the 43 players or family representatives to the May 17 dinner.

"We will announce the top 13 and up to eight reserves on the night," Whitton said.

"It is difficult to compare eras as so many good players have played the game in the Warwick area."

There have been 19 clubs in the Warwick area in the first 100 years, including outlying clubs like Tannymorel, Emu Vale, Swan Creek and Freestone.

Queensland Rugby League Team of the Century member Mick Madsen played for Tannymorel before becoming one of the greatest props in league history.

See the Daily News for regular updates on centenary news and a feature before the event.
