Funding drives town's waste facility upgrades

UPGRADES to the Goondiwindi Waste Facility are starting to take shape as council secures funding through the Royalties for the Regions program.

The upgrades include the installation of a weighbridge and improvements to internal roads as part of an ongoing plan to advance waste management practices across the region.

The new weighbridge will be used to collect data to help with the development of a long term waste strategy to improve financial sustainability.

Waste Management portfolio representative councillor Rob Mackenzie said the weighbridge was an important first step in trying to measure exactly what is going into our facility.

"We believe a major part of the waste processed at the Goondiwindi site is commercial and industrial waste which is currently not taken into account when charging and we believe this needs to be identified when it comes to costing," he said.

"Everyone will benefit from the new roads and green waste areas that should create alternate disposal and recycling methods sometime in the future, to further reduce landfill at Goondiwindi.

"Once we have collected all data over a trial period, council will be looking at introducing a commercial waste user fee, like other centres have."
