Waste water goes to growers

THE Stanthorpe waste water system has been upgraded and a new computer system has been installed to solve ongoing problems irrigators have had getting allocated waste water at the right time.

Mayor Peter Blundell and councillors inspected the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system last week and were impressed.

Cr Blundell said the council and district growers had an agreement for the supply of treated waste water to be used on certain crops.

However, there had been issues with both infrastructure and computer programming.

"Council's water team have worked on this for the past six months, upgrading valves, flow meters and other civil infrastructure as well as the computer programming to enable much more accurate data analysis," he said.

"Our staff have also ensured there is better system maintenance and contingencies.

"Now irrigators can be confident the system will work and be assured about supply of water.

Granite Belt fruit farmer Fred Baronio said the new SCADA system was very much improved and he couldn't thank the council enough for upgrading and investing in the waste water project.

"The old system was not reliable and a lot of the work had to be done manually, but now everything is done electronically.

"Council staff can use their iPads and turn water on and off at the click of a button," he said.
