Watch an artist at work and encourage young creatives

THE new year brings new opportunities for all ages at Warwick Art Gallery.

Visitors are able to continue to enjoy the experience of watching Barry Blaikie at work on his miniatures in the Orange Wall Gallery and explore the incredibly touching Remember me: the lost diggers of Vignacourt both on display until February 17.

The new Open Studio project started for young artists aged six to 13 years at the start of the school term.

This is an opportunity for young art lovers to enjoy the company of other young people who love to be creative.

The talented staff and volunteers from the gallery will be on hand to assist children with skills ranging from drawing and painting to knitting and crochet.

More independent young "Picassos” can work on their own with access to loads of exciting and inspiring materials.

The Open Studio places are in high demand with potential to add additional days and also expand to run sessions for older teenagers.

Gallery director Karina Devine has a background as a secondary school teacher and she said she was looking forward to getting to know young locals who loved art as much as she did.

"I have been obsessed with art all of my life and there really isn't a day where I don't do something artistic,” Ms Devine said.

"It gives me so much pleasure and also helps me work though my emotions and worries.”

The gallery has built a reputation over the years for providing opportunities for creative locals to participate in making work for exhibition in the gallery.

None of these quite matches the outstanding success of the Warwick Art Gallery Yarntopians - the yarn bombing team.

It is hard to beat the incredible achievements of this creative group who work for most of the year to produce a yarn artwork for the Jumpers and Jazz in July Festival.

The team meets regularly, at the gallery and enjoy the camaraderie of crafting something wonderful together.

Most of the yarnbombing team has skills in crochet and knitting however basic hand sewing skills are also in high demand.

The team is well under way making items for the 2018 Jumpers and Jazz in July display called 'Home Sweet Home'.
