Watch this 1963 ute fly
DRAG RACING: Ross Costello started drag racing 26 years ago and can't get enough of it.
He will be one of more than 100 drivers/riders in action in round 1 of JP Racing Dragfest this weekend at Warwick Dragway.
"It is in the blood,” the Warwick driver said.
"They are a good crowd at drag racing and you certainly get an adrenaline rush. It is in addictive sport.”
Costello drives a 1963 EH Holden ute with a big block Chev 489 motor.
He has driven the ute for 18 years.
"I had an EL Torana with a Holden 208 motor which I built from the ground up,” he said.
"I sold it a decade or so ago and now we are building a car for my partner Suzie which will be finished for the second round of Dragfest in October.
"It will be powered by a small block Chev 350 so we won't be in the same class.
"I will run in nostalgia street on the weekend and Suzie will be in the street class in October.”
He first learnt all about engines from his father Mac Costello on the family property "Seagoe” at Thane and then did eight years of work with Phil "Swampy” Springate in his workshop G and M Autos.
Costello will be in a field of more than 15 in nostalgia street where his toughest opposition will come from Shane Molloy from Brisbane who has five Dragfest wins to his credit in the class.
"We do it for the fun and the entertainment,” he said.
"It costs a bit of money to build a car but the support of sponsor Town and Country Auto Electrics and the Loy family makes it a lot easier.”
Gates open at 8am today with scrutineering from 9am-2pm.
Qualifying will be held from 10am-5pm today SAT with round 1 of racing from 5.30-7.30pm.
The drag racing fanatics will be at it again on Sunday with racing from 9am to mid afternoon.
