Watch this space: Council calls for naming help

WHEN Sydney ran a competition to name a new ferry, they ended up with the giggle-inducing title Ferry McFerryface.

It came after the British voted to call one of their own research vessels Boaty McBoatface last year.

Now the Southern Downs Regional Council have made a similarly bold move, calling out to the community for their help naming two Southern Downs locations.

The first is the newly constructed bridge on Boxs Rd, Tannymorel, while the other is the revamped Rogers Street Car Park in Stanthorpe.

In June this year, the council conducted official naming and opening ceremonies for five new bridges in the region.

They included Bellingham Bridge, Charlie Fraser Bridge, Tom Dunn Bridge, Jacob Benz Bridge and Tex McGee Bridge.

All the bridges were named after people who made a contribution to the local area or the wider Southern Downs Region.

Similarly, the council are requesting the name of the Stanthorpe car park to reflect an individual who has made a contribution to the local area.

Those with great ideas are encouraged to submit a written suggestion.

The submission must include your name and contact details, the suggested name and a brief statement outlining why the individual should be commemorated.

All submissions must be made by 5pm on Friday December 8.

Written suggestions with the above details can be submitted via email to mail@sdrc.qld. gov.au, posted to the chief executive officer, Southern Downs Regional Council, PO Box 26, Warwick Qld 4370.

Alternatively they can be delivered to the council's Community Contact Centres in Warwick and Stanthorpe.

Suggestions will be considered at the January general meeting.
