Water issues of a different kind hit town

IF dirty, brown water is flowing from your faucets at the moment then there could be a simple explanation why.

Southern Downs Regional Council is still investigating what went wrong but there was a major water main break in Stanthorpe Monday afternoon.

"Council was alerted to a major water main break at Stanthorpe yesterday and crews responded immediately,” a council spokeswoman said.

"Council has no information on the volume of water lost, but attended and repaired the break immediately.

"Residents south of Quart Pot Creek may experience dirty water and air in the water lines for the next 24-48 hours.”

The council has previously said that ageing infrastructure has led to a significant amount of water loss, with supply already at an all time low.

Up to 25 per cent of the region's water is being lost to leaks, every year.

After posting the news to their Facebook page council were offered some other helpful water-saving advice.

"You might want to check the half-flush in a number of public toilets. It's a bit difficult to save water if you have to use the full-flush,” Mary-Jane Hese said.

"It is really the small things that council should do to achieve water savings. Basic common-sense escapes some,” Ruby Woodhouse wrote.

At this stage the council could not confirm what caused the issue.
