Water Rats coach rates fitness all important in rugby role

COACH'S CORNER: VLAD Savovski is the new coach of the Warwick Water Rats B-grade men's team.

He first played under-17 rugby union in Newcastle and played at Randwick from 2007 to 2010 and coached Randwick colts in 2011-2012.

Savovski is a tighthead prop and talks about his coaching philosophy.

My big thing with coaching is getting each player to utilise their natural skills without over coaching them.

I believe coaches can enforce styles on players which is not a good idea.

I am big on fitness and my guess is we would run 6-10km at a Tuesday training session.

At the Water Rats, we concentrate on fitness and ball skills on a Tuesday night and then on a Thursday work as a unit with the forwards concentrating on set pieces and the backs working on developing combinations and kicking plans.

We have a squad of 25 players and I like to make sure everyone gets a run each week.

At the weekend, we lost to Narrabri 28-27 in a trial game at Moree and I was happy with the effort. Four young guns Jacob Wilton, Darcy Meek, Tom Winter and Nathan Walker really stood up at Moree.

More players welcome at training for the men's and new women's teams at 6.30pm on Tuesday and Thursday at Risdon Oval. More information from Savovski on 0421981970.
