Water Rats knock off Gundy

THE Warwick Water Rats have clawed their way to the top of the season's ladder after claiming victory against the Goondiwindi Emus at the weekend.

Captain and coach Dave Young said the secret to claiming the 26-14 win and knocking Gundy off the top of the ladder was simply teamwork.

"It really was a team effort. Everyone came together in the second half and we pretty much stuck it to them," he said.

"Communication is the biggest thing. Everyone is talking and they know their position on the field."

Standout players for the game were point scorers Sam Waugh and Cody Tandy, and Dave Young.

Young said he was fairly confident the Water Rats' performance would carry them through to the finals.

"We knew it was going to be a hard game, and it was, but it just shows we are the best by beating the best," he said.

The Water Rats will take it easy for the next couple of weeks, with the team enjoying two straight byes.

Following their break, the boys will play just two games before heading into the finals.

Young said in the lead up to the finals the players would be working on cutting the number of on-field errors and infringements.

The team's next game will be on July 28 against Chinchilla at Condamine.
