Water Rats look to field extra rugby union team
RUGBY UNION: The Warwick Water Rats plan a return to A-grade Darling Downs men's rugby by the start of the 2019 season.
Club president Andrew Williams said the club was working towards fielding an A-grade men's team in addition to the current B-grade men and sevens women's teams.
"It all depends on numbers,” he said.
"A few of our players have found some prospective new players so we will look at different options for next season but definitely want to be in A grade by 2019.”
This season, Warwick played B grade against the same clubs which Gatton met in A and C grades in the same rounds.
Warwick just missed the B-grade top five this season while the women's team under coach Lauren Fowler made the women's grand final before going down 20-7 to Bears.
Williams also raised the possibility of fielding two women's teams in the Darling Downs competition. This season, most of the women's games were at fortnightly carnivals at which teams played multiple games.
The 2017 season will officially finish with this Saturday's trophy night and the club will hold its annual general meeting in November.
Williams will attend a Darling Downs Rugby Union club president's meeting in Toowoomba on October 28 where he hopes to obtain more information on plans for next season.
