Water Rats training already for 2018 season

RUGBY UNION: The Warwick Water Rats are back training for the 2018 season.

Coach Vlad Savovski said up to 15 men had been at a Tuesday or Thursday training session.

"We average about 12 men and seven women at training, more welcome at 6pm any session to mid December,” he said.

Jared Fearby was the major winner at the recent trophy night with the players' player and best forward awards.

Max Hall was best back and forward Ross Murray the rookie of the year.

Warwick women enjoyed an outstanding season in the first women's sevens competition on the Downs and the enthusiasm is there for a successful 2018.

The club will elect officials and coaches at its annual general meeting on Wednesday.

Savovski said a move to field an A-grade team was still a possibility.

"We will need to build up our player base to play Agrade,” he said.

"The club will have two or three Year 12 students from Scots PGC College in our team next season.

"The boys from Scots were at training until school finished for the year,” he said.

This season, Warwick narrowly missed the B-grade play-offs after making the finals in 2016.

Savovski and his brother, Anthony, who have played for Randwick in Sydney, make up part of one of the best front rows in any grade in Darling Downs rugby.
