Water Rats women do town proud in finals
TUESDAY TANTRUM with Gerard Walsh
THE Water Rats women did the town proud to win the inaugural Downs sevens minor premiership and make the grand final.
They beat one of the powers of Downs rugby, Dalby, 17-12 in the qualifying final to make the grand final on Saturday.
I was of the opinion it was an advantage to play at 12.45pm and then in the grand final at 2.45pm but going on the way Bears started, perhaps the advantage was with the team playing its first game of the day.
The Water Rats women never gave up and Jayde Ware scored a try when the team was down 20-0. Tshinta Kendall landed the conversion for a 20-7 final scoreline.
One of the highlights of the match was when Tshinta chased down player of the final Kiara Taylor who ran 60m before being tackled.
Bears coach Scott Gale said at the presentations that Warwick was the most improved team in the competition.
You can't ask for much more than that and well done to coach Lauren Fowler, all 19 players in the squad, and the club for a great first season.
One of the highlights of the final for me was spotting a section of the crowd cheering for Warwick. I found out it was Dalby fans going for the country team against Bears from Toowoomba.
Should be an interesting time for Warwick rugby with the Water Rats men wanting to return to A grade.
Dalby won A-grade in the men on Saturday with Rangers B-grade premiers and Goondiwindi winning C grade.
