Water skiers hit the dam

OVERHEAD may have been dark and drizzly, but the surface of Storm King Dam dazzled at the weekend when a small group of water skiers took to the water.

Waterski Queensland had planned to hold a development day at the weekend, but poor weather conditions deterred skiers from Toowoomba and Warwick.

Instead, Waterski Queensland development officer John Weeks said local skiers made the most of the open space to practice.

"It's all about teaching people to learn to ski if they want to, and also exposing them to the slalom course," he said.

"A lot of seasonal skiers have never been on a slalom course before."

The course involves six "outside" buoys which skiers have to manoeuvre around.

The faster skiers continue through each round in an elimination-type competition and if competitors reach the maximum speed, the rope is then shortened.

Stanthorpe skier Susie Cobon, who has been on the water since she was six years old, said her whole family loved the sport.

"It's just fun to do. I can go over the wake now - that's really hard," she said.

Susie said she had been on one ski for the last couple of years, after starting on two skis.

Ski enthusiast Linda Derrick said Storm King Dam was "an ideal place" to ski.

"It's a good spectator sport and on the bank it's really easy to see, which is a good thing," she said.

"Weekends like these allow people to develop their skills or pick up the sport for the first time."

Waterski Queensland will hold a state-wide competition January 14-15 starting 7am.
