Western Downs beat Western Downs
LACHLAN Gross took 2-6 and scored 15 to be the best Warwick performer in a 36-run loss to Western Downs in the first under-14 representative cricket match of the season.
Western Downs batted first and was dismissed for 99.
Gross took his wickets off 5.2 overs and received best support from Carly Cooper with 2-14 off six overs.
In reply, Warwick was all out for 63, Ryan Collins making 18 and Gross 15.
Brendan Buckley was the best of the Western Downs bowlers with 4-8 off five overs.
A feature of the match was a fine catch by Gross at first slip when he dived backwards to catch a top edge from a Western Downs batsman.
Warwick U14 manager Ross Bilbrough said most of the side was in the U12 team which went down by six runs to Toowoomba last season.
“We host Toowoomba on Sunday but will need to improve our batting if we are to win,” Bilbrough said.
In the U12 game on Sunday on the Queen’s Park synthetic, Warwick batted first and made 117.
At one stage, Warwick was 8-53 but improved to 9-100 courtesy of a 47-run partnership by Will Gordon and Fraser McVeigh.
In reply, Western Downs made 215 with Kaleb Hartwick top scoring with 56 retired.
Stewart Henderson was the best of the Warwick bowlers with 2-22 off eight economical overs.
Alex Fessey offered good support with 2-21 off four overs.
Joe O’Shannessy took the best catch of the match at point for Warwick.
Warwick hosts Toowoomba in an U12 game on Sunday. Six Warwick players have made Darling Downs and South West zone teams this season.
Lachlan Gross (U14), Ryan Collins (U14 development), Brodie Frizzell and Jordan Siebenhausen (U15), Mitchell McLennan (U15 development) and Pat Gribbin (U16) will fly the Warwick flag at state carnivals during the Christmas school holidays.
