Wattles 18s head for game with Bushrangers at Tenterfield
RUGBY LEAGUE: The Mick Ryan coached Wattles under-18 side will play the Border Bushrangers in round 1 of the TRL on Saturday at Tenterfield.
There are 11 clubs in the TRL senior grades and 13 teams in the U18 grade following the withdrawal of Oakey from the U18s.
Border is fielding one team and South Burnett two in the U18s.
Ryan has a squad of 16 for the game at Tenterfield at 2pm (Queensland time).
“I only had one trial game last weekend when I was really happy with the team,” Ryan said.
“Almost half the team is backing up for a second under-18 season and some strong players are up from last year’s under-16 team.”
Max Rubie is captain and in his second 18s year. Tom Morris will be the goalkicker.
The Border Bushrangers team had a game against Warwick Cowboys and a weekend camp in preparation of its debut in the TRL.
The Border side has been training hard under coach Peter Brannigan and manager Michael Jensen.
While the majority of players are from Stanthorpe and Tenterfield, there are players from other areas of the Border Rugby League in the team.
The U18 game will be in between a full day of women’s leaguetag involving Tenterfield, Stanthorpe, Wallangarra, Pittsworth and Goondiwindi teams.
