Wattles and Valleys each pocket points from draw

RUGBY LEAGUE: The Wattles managed to hold on for a share of vital TRL points on Saturday at Herb Steinohrt Oval, outlasting a Valleys fightback that resulted in a 16-all draw.

Wattles and Valleys were in equal second place on the ladder along with Gatton and Pittsworth, all on 20 points, and while a loss could have seen any of those teams tumble out of the top five, Saturday night's draw will see both Wattles and Valleys level in third place with Highfields.

Club president Aaron Scheid was happy to at least pocket the draw after a fierce final 15-minute onslaught by the Roosters on their home turf.

"It was a gutsy effort by our boys, but there will be continual pressure for all the sides balancing on top of the ladder with a fortnight of fixtures remaining," he said.

"The top five won't be clear cut until that last fixture is played. We need to win against Pittsworth next Saturday and then back up again against Oakey in our final competition fixture, the next fortnight won't be for the fainthearted," he said.

Wattles led 6-4 at half-time against Valleys courtesy of an 18th minute try by second-rower Mitch Koina and a Matt Duggan conversion.

Five minutes after the break, lock Aaron Scheid touched down, Wattles Player of the Match Mitch Koina reaching out with a long arm 15 minutes later for a 16-4 Warriors lead.

Valleys turned up the heat with eight minutes to go, scoring to trail 16-10, touching down again with four minutes on the ground clock to level the match ledger.

Mitch Koina's two tries lifted his season total to 16 from 16 matches. Front rower Mitch Hannant and fullback Jackson Green impressed throughout.

Wattles won reserve grade 20-16 and lost 66-12 in under-18.
