Wattles go down to Gatton after Golden Point

WATTLES missed the chance to win their first Madsen Rasmussen Trophy final for nine years when they went down 37-33 to Gatton at Clive Berghofer Stadium today.

The score in the Toowoomba Rugby League mid-season final in A grade was 33-all at fulltime after both Matt Duggan (Wattles) and Ashley Boney (Gatton) kicked field goals late in the game.

The final went to golden point and after 10 minutes and 34 seconds, an attempt by Wattles to keep the ball in play and avert a 40/20 kick resulted in Gatton winger Cameron Nicholls pouncing on the loose ball to run 20 metres to score.

Wattles had led 12-10 at halftime and trailed 32-12 after 63 minutes before a grandstand finish.

Gatton lock Douglas Asiata won the player of the match award. Stanthorpe-based prop Dale Perkins played in the Gatton win.

Brendan Perkins, of Stanthorpe, was part of the Gatton 34-22 win in the reserve-grade President's Cup.
