Wattles have tough task with road trip to Highfields

RUGBY LEAGUE: The light at the end of the TRL road to the premiership finals may be clearly visible to coach Gary Lawrence and his A-grade Wattles Warriors, but two significant hurdles need to be cleared if they are to finish comfortably in the top six.

Those hurdles are opposing clubs the Highfields Eagles and Valleys Roosters, both top of the table competitors and serious grand final contenders.

Ever-cautious coach Lawrence feels his side has the goods to be ahead on the scoreboard at full-time on Sunday at the Highfields Kuhl's Road Complex, but his Warriors will certainly have to earn their keep.

"A lot will depend on our go-forward and we will need front row forward leaders Michael Pearson and Jarred Bradfield to set the same example they have in recent weeks,” Lawrence said.

"If we have the room, the creativity of playmaker Matt Duggan and our speed outside will stand us in good stead.”

Third-placed Highfields will mean business, spurred on by their victory against Dalby last week, trailing 16-2at half-time before winning 26-22.

"They have youth, fitness and speed, and it's their home turf,” Lawrence said.

"We will have to compete in every set over the 80minutes.”

It's a must-win situation for fifth-placed Wattles, but Lawrence is encouraged by the return of some of his key players, who have been waylaid with injury.

Toowoomba representative forward and early season team skipper Dale Perkins will start off the A-grade bench after two bouts of surgery and an absence since April.

Another under an injury cloud is solid forward Dylan Wilson, but Lawrence was more than happy with how he trained on Tuesday.

"We had a very pleasing training session. It was especially good to see players fresh and free of injury niggles after the bye week off.”

Talented lock forward Jaime Abbas is still recovering from a foot injury and will need at least another week.

First game 11.30am, A-grade at 2.30pm.
