Wattles hit top form

WITH the prestigious tradition that is the Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy final just a fortnight away, and a bottleneck having formed of the teams in the top five of the Toowoomba Rugby League premiership ladder, the third-placed Wattles Warriors A graders have to make every post a winner.

Wattles play Brothers tomorrow in a match they should win but coach Luke Duggan is taking nothing for granted.

Wattles will likely have to do without halfback Matt Duggan, who is unlikely to play due to a leg injury.

On the positive side Wattles this week signed utility back Michael Purcell from the Mitchell Magpies.

Mitchell club president John Birkett rates Purcell one of the best players to play in south-west Queensland.

While he has been playing five-eight for the Magpies, Purcell has great speed and has represented the South West Stockmen as a winger.

The flyer touched down for five tries during the weekend of the recent Central Division 47th Battalion Carnival in Roma, and at the recent QRL Outback Carnival, he crossed for 15 tries in three games.

Rugby league isn't the Wattles winger's only claim to fame as a natural sportsman.

In 2011, Purcell qualified and competed in the prestigious New York Marathon.

While his marathon skills won't be required tomorrow, Purcell has an opportunity at Platz Oval to show his wares and that he can compete at the top levels of the TRL competition.
