Wattles just too good for the Boars in TRL
RUGBY LEAGUE: Wattles primed their form for round 1 of the Toowoomba Rugby League competition with a 78-6 win against Goondiwindi at Platz Oval on Sunday.
Wattles coach Gary Lawrence said the score did not reflect the strong performances by the Goondiwindi players.
"Goondiwindi played well in patches but some players were in two games on the day and they ran out of legs,” he said.
"Michael Duggan was good at five-eighth for Wattles and his cousin Matt Duggan was just behind him with a strong performance at halfback.
"Kyle Marsh from Stanthorpe was strong in the forwards for Wattles.”
English import Jordan Gale is recovering from a hip injury and a decision will be made later in the week about his fitness for this weekend.
Fullback Jackson Green will play his first game back at Wattles this weekend providing his clearance from playing in England comes through in time.
In reserve grade, Wattles won 48-24 with Gilbert McAntee showing plenty of class from fullback for the home side.
"The reserve-grade team performance was the best I have seen by the Wattles boys,” Lawrence said.
Goondiwindi scored a convincing win in U18s.
Wattles will host Souths at Platz Oval on Saturday in round 1 of the TRL.
Goondiwindi will also be at home on Saturday to Valleys.
The Warwick Cowboys will host Pittsworth in what will be a replay of last season's grand final in A grade on Sunday at Father Ranger Oval.
