Wattles pin hopes on semi victory

RUGBY LEAGUE: Wattles Warriors skipper Ryan Duggan can be considered a more than experienced hand in finals footy and on Saturday will be marshalling his troops for victory as they take on reigning Toowoomba Rugby League premiers the Pittsworth Danes in the knock-out semi-final at Clive Berghofer Stadium.

"It's just another game,” according to the captain who leads by example, but a game Wattles must win if they are to continue their march towards the 2017 TRL grand final day.

The Warriors put their best foot forward after a round 12 loss at the hands of fellow finalists Southern Suburbs before ushering themselves in to the finals series after claiming the scalps of Pittsworth, Oakey, Dalby and Highfields in succession and a fifth-place finish.

They have clashed with Pittsworth twice this year, the ledger showing a win apiece.

Saturday's semi-final at 7pm is sudden death for the Warriors or the Danes, but enthusiastic young second-rower Jace Wilson thinks the lads in green and gold have what it takes to go the distance.

Wilson is Wattles through and through, hailing from a family deeply entrenched in the club's history.

His brother Brenden will also be in the Warriors line-up that runs on against the Danes.

Jace has been packing himself and his enthusiasm in to Wattles back-row since Round 14 and has had more than a taste of what's necessary to win against top level opponents.

"It's great to be playing in the company of those in the team, the speed and physicality of the games is amazing,” he said.

Coach Gary Lawrence speaks highly of the back-rower, indeed all of his Wattles' pack, "the boys might not be a pretty sight but I'd take them in to battle with me.”

Regardless of Wattles 40-26 win against Pittsworth in Round 13, Lawrence is happy to praise the Danes.

"They are the reigning premiers and finished third on the ladder this year, they have earned respect.

"They are a big physical side up front, a set of classy halves with an excellent kicking game and speed to burn on the fringes.”

There is no room for nonchalance in the Warriors thinking leading up to tomorrow.

"We have worked on our error rate, discipline and an update on the rules,” smiled Lawrence.

"We need to keep it simple and consistent.”

The injury cloud continues to loom over the green and gold dressing room, with both five-eighth contenders Jaime Abbas and Josh Henry battling injuries, and prop Michael Pearson struggling with flu.
