Wattles strong in defeat against Highfields at home

RUGBY LEAGUE: Wattles held Highfields to 14-all at half-time before going down 37-26 in A grade at Platz Oval yesterday.

The home side led 14-4 five minutes before half-time before conceding two late tries.

The score was 26-all with 20 minutes to go in the second half before Highfields scored two late tries and landed a field goal.

Centre Brendon Wilson scored two tries, Max Somes, Jason Wilmot and Joe Morris one each for Wattles.

Wilmot landed three goals. In A grade, Tyrone Jowell won players' player after a strong performance in the second row.

Jarred Bradfield had a strong game at prop.

Max Somes impressed again in the centres.  

Gilbert (Dale) McAntee was strong in attack from fullback and took some great catches under the high ball.

The Lee brothers, Jarrod and Steven, were a constant threat to Wattles along with hooker Nick Bainbridge.

Wattles second rower and captain Dale Perkins dislocated his shoulder but bravely played on after receiving attention and is the only injury concern in the run-up to this Sunday's clash with Warwick at Father Ranger Oval.

Highfields won reserve grade 34-24 after Wattles recovered from a 20-0 half-time deficit. Jake Christensen was players' player for Wattles.

In the under-18 game, Highdfields won 28-24 in a close see-sawing game after Wattles led 18-12 at half-time.

Tom Duggan and Gus Somes shared the players' player award.
