Wayne eyes off Hell of the West Triathlon at Goondiwindi

TRIATHLON: Wayne Schnitzerling wasn't worried about his place in round 4 of the Toowoomba Tri Series at Helidon on Sunday - he used it as a pacing test for the Hell of the West Triathlon at Goondiwindi in a fortnight.

He led for 1495m of the 1500m swim leg before the second and third-placed swimmers got out of the water quicker.

"I went to the left of one bouy and had to stop and turn round which cost me 10 seconds," Schnitzerling said.

"One of the other two was third at Robina last weekend in the national series so the more experienced ones were quicker out of the water."

Schnitzerling was fourth at the end of the 40km cycle leg but was overtaken by two runners in the final 800m of the 10km run to finish sixth.

"I was real happy with my performance, I was just using it as pacing for the Hell of the West at Goondiwindi."

The Hell of the West is a 2km swim, 80km cycle and 20km run, which Schnitzerling aims to finish within four and a half hours.

The Warwick Tri-ers team of Selena Vickers (swim), Laura Brazier (cycle) and Neil Vickers (run) were like Schnitzerling, it was for fun not placings at Helidon.

Selena was fourth out of the water, just behind Schnitzerling, after a swim in the lake at the Helidon Ski Park.

Brazier rode the 40km bike leg in a little over an hour and then Neil completed the team effort with a 10km run in 46 minutes.

"It was the first Olympic distance team triathlon for me and it was a tough two-lap ride," Brazier said.

"The wind didn't make it easy but I was happy with my performance in the tough conditions."

Selena has completed the 2km swim leg in the Hell of the West Triathlon and was competing in her second Olympic distance event.

"There were quite a few reeds in the lake, you zig zag a fair bit as you swim a course around the bouys," she said.

Warwick junior Saxon Charles won his age group as a forerunner to the Hell of the West and the state championships in mid February.

His younger brother Kydan also competed in the junior event.
