University in lockdown amid shooting

MULTIPLE people have been reported injured after a shooting at a university campus in the US.

The shooting took place just after 7.30pm local time at the Detroit Science Center at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan during a "Noel Night" event.

According to a local news site, Click On Detroit, shots were fired as the annual Christmas event took place in midtown Detroit. The festivities attract tens of thousands of people, including families and children, to the city, according to Click on Detroit.

Detroit police have confirmed three teenagers, a girl and two boys, were shot and have been taken to hospital. The injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening.

The university campus has gone into lockdown, while police have closed off surrounding streets.

One woman on Twitter, said "a mob of people came running and screaming out of the science center" and described the incident as "so scary".

"We had just left the DIA going towards the Historical Museum when people began running from behind us to the grass area," witness Farah Hammoud told Detroit News.

The suspect is reportedly not in custody. A local TV reporter said there was never an active shooter, the incident was just a random shooting.
