‘We do the best we can to help'
FOR THE ninth year in a row, paramedics have been dubbed the most trusted professionals in Australia, closely followed by firefighters and rescue volunteers.
The list was released yesterday and emergency services officers could not have been happier.
Warwick Advanced Care paramedic Laura Bear said she was proud to call herself a paramedic.
"It's good to know the community trusts us," she said.
"I guess it's because we are always there when they call and we do the best we can to help them."
Firefighters took out second place and Warwick's Station Officer Dennis Burton acknowledged the achievement.
"I would like to recognise the Ambulance Service for coming in first," he said.
"It's a good effort by them."
Mr Burton said the recognition made him feel good.
"It's pretty good to know we are held in high esteem by members of the public," he said. "I think it is because of the work we do for the community.
"You have to be a special person to be part of the emergency services and it's all about helping the community when they are in need."
Warwick's local SES controller John Newley has been a member of the SES for 35 years.
Mr Newley said the recent natural disasters had boosted the public's opinion of volunteer rescue workers.
"It's good to get the recognition," he said.
"I think it's mainly come from what's happened during the 2010 and 2011 floods.
"Between the floods and the cyclones I think the SES has come to be held in pretty high esteem by the community. It makes me feel very proud."
Also in the top 10 were pilots, nurses, GPs and veterinarians. Police, teachers, armed forces and hairdressers pulled places in the top 20. Farmers came in at seven.
