OPINION: We still have a way to go

AT ONE time, the word feminist was used to describe a brave and bold woman who was prepared to stick it to the man and fight for women to be seen as equal.

These were people who were admired for their strength and fierceness.

Over time the word has evolved into an extremely negative one - with protesters claiming feminists are all angry, hairy and bra-less women whose main purpose is to destroy and devour men.

As likely as that sounds, it's not quite accurate.

Although it is 2015 and women have come along way - through the tenacity and courage of other women - we still aren't enjoying the equality we deserve. And neither is our bank balance.

Women are still overlooked for jobs and when they do manage to get one, they are rewarded with a staggering 29% less than their male counterparts.

This is why feminism still needs to exist in the world.

Not to tear down men but to keep empowering women until they are awarded the respect, equality and yes, money they deserve.
