FOR one day only, crowds could get into the excitement and awe of auctioning at the Allora Community Auction.

This annual event held by the Allora Show Society at the showground's Tom Cowley Oval has each year relied on the helping hands of local volunteers.

Show Society patron Ted Cowley said the 40th annual auction went off without a hitch.

"Everything's gone very smoothly," Mr Cowley said.

"We've had a nice lot of workers and have had great support from community groups."

Show Society President Shirley Cornhill agreed the day would not have gone as smoothly without the help of myriad volunteers in the week leading up to the auction.

"Crowd wise the auction has been fantastic," Mrs Cornhill said.

"We rely on the volunteers to turn up and then we split the profits.

"We'd like to thank all the volunteers for their help - some of us are here every day for a week at least."

Families and friends could come along to the auction to score are bargain or just to have a look at what was on offer.

Mr Cowley said it was the best conditions they've had for the auction, usually held on the Queen's Birthday public holiday.

"We've had beautiful weather, the best weather we've ever had so everyone can participate," he said.

"We've got close to 700 bidding cards that have gone out and there are plenty of people and items up for auction."

Plenty was no exaggeration, with some 2054 items to be auctioned off by the end of the day.

Mrs Cornhill said items included the usual old metal items like pedal cars and bicycles, but there were also heaps of chairs, tables, wardrobes and other home wares on offer.

"It's a good fundraiser," Mr Cowley said.

"It's a lot of work but it's as much a social event as it is a fundraiser and it brings the community together."

Mr Cowley said profits raised from the auction, usually totalling about $6000, would be partially contributed to the Show Society while the remainder would be given to the community volunteers.
