Website scammer cons family out of $1750 bond for house

CHAD Stratmore and his young family were all packed up and excited at the prospect of moving into a new rental home in Frenchville.

When the keys to the home did not arrive as promised, he realised that he had fallen victim to a well-devised internet scam.

On Tuesday last week, the Rockhampton glazier thought he had found the perfect place - a four-bedroom house, great family home, price negotiable on application.

He emailed the owners, expressing his interest. Several hours later, a woman named Kylie phoned Chad and told him to go and view the house - from the outside.

"The next day, she informed us that we had got the house and we should go ahead and complete all the forms and pay the bond on Thursday," Chad said. "They said they were going to put the keys in the mail or provide an address where we could pick them up."

Chad completed the forms, all of which he said appeared authentic. He also paid the $1750 bond.

Come Friday, when the keys had not arrived by post and he had not been given a collection address, Chad came to the shocking realisation that he had been conned.

The 25-year-old has now placed his own advertisement on the Gumtree site to warn other customers.
