Webster takes out title

WARWICK karate star David Webster won the Renbukan Karate National Championship in Toowoomba on Sunday.

Webster, a first-dan black belt, has been training with Renbukan Karate for the past six years.

The nationals are contested annually and 80 competitors from as far away as the Gold Coast and Roma competed in Toowoomba at the weekend.

Renbukan Karate Darling Downs chief instructor Mike Jordan said Webster was super fit.

"He was the smallest guy in the weekend competition and surprised his opponents," Jordan said.

"David is very quick for his size and hard to catch with his evasive ability."

Webster won from Gold Coast competitor Troy Jennings.

The youngest in the field, Steve Lawler, 19, of Roma, was third and Michael Levitt, of Toowoomba, fourth.

Webster is working towards his second Dan Black belt which he is hoping to be tested for at the Gold Coast in June next year.

"Our world chief instructor, an eighth-degree black belt, will travel from Japan to be part of the grading panel for the Gold Coast," Jordan said.

Webster is a joint instructor of the Renbukan Karate discipline in Warwick with Wilf Sim. They combine to take a children's program each Tuesday evening in the sports hall at WIRAC.

Each week, Webster is instructor for a women's self-defence class in Warwick.

He also travels from Warwick to Killarney each week for a children's class each Monday.
