Wee bitta piping at Scots

IF YOU spent Saturday with the sounds of Gaelic tunes ringing in your ears, you weren't the only one.

Scots PGC College hosted over 175 of Queensland's best Scottish bands, with performers playing bagpipes, drums and other pipes.

The school's bandmaster Sandy Dalziel said the day of Scottish culture and competition was a great opportunity for the students, especially the "wee kids".

"The competitions range from under-12s up to veterans, who are anyone over 35," the accomplished bagpiper said.

"At 4.30pm we (had) the march past where all the different bands (took) to the field."

Twins Ewan and Shona McFarlane said they took after their mother in the music department.

"I can play a bit of traditional Scottish music and some modern stuff," Ewan said.

"My mum plays the bagpipes so that's why I started.

"I've been doing it for five years."

Shona plays the tenor and snare drums.

"Mum plays bagpipes, and I always had to go to bagpipe practice, and I saw the drums and I thought, that's cool," the Scots PGC boarder said.

"We are from Narrabri, and when looking for schools mum said: 'It's got to be co-educational and have a pipe band'."

Riley Donaldson, 12, competed on the day with her learner chanter, an instrument she described as being the training wheels for her first set of bagpipes.

"It's like a recorder but you use it to learn the bagpipes," she said.

"After my chanter I'll go on to my goose (practice bag)."

Like the McFarlane twins, Riley said her decision to take up the instrument was family-inspired.

"My family is made up of some Scots and there is a history of bagpipe playing," she said.

The young competitor was stoked with her results from the day.

"I've done one competition today and I came first!"
