Weekend off for Warriors before finals run

RUGBY LEAGUE: Coach Travis Burns may have allowed his National Farmers Warehouse' Wattles Warriors A-graders to put their rugby league cue in the rack this weekend but the thoughts of the June 17 Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy are well in mind.

The Warriors have booked a place in the mid-season championship final at Herb Steinohrt Oval but as yet are unsure of their opponents out of the Highfields Eagles and Valleys Roosters.

Wattles first and reserve-grade sides have drawn a bye in TRL round 11 this weekend and will be at the Allora Sports Club for the annual Wattles Golf/Bowls Open.

No stranger to big match build-up, Burns is looking to have his top graders put the footy to the back of their minds until training on Tuesday, and enjoy the weekend event.

"We are injury free and in clear first place,” Burns said.

"It doesn't get much better coming in to the Madsen-Rasmussen final. We rested a few players in our last game and still won well.”

"I am very pleased with the form of our younger brigade, including the likes of Andrew Richardson and Will O'Gradey who are certainly hitting their straps at the right time.

"This weekend we'll just enioy some leisure time and refocus come Monday.”

Wattles have won the Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy on five occasions (1984, 1997, 1998, 2005, 2015).

The Wattles Railway Hotel side is sitting second in the reserve-grade premiership battle but results this weekend could edge them out of a cup final appearance.
