Weighing in for Longreach relief
WARWICK locals are pulling their weight to help the Longreach community amidst a major drought.
Starting last week, the Warwick Weight Crunchers have been collecting food and household items to send to Longreach, with three boxes already on their way to affected properties.
"It's always a good idea to help people out, and we want to show our gratitude to the farmers," club president Rosemary Rasanen said.
The group has this week donated another box and a $100 voucher, presented to the Community Disaster Relief Van (CDRV) at Oak Tree Retirement Village on Monday morning.
CDRV representative Marita Hutley said she was encouraged by their support, and hoped more people would get involved.
"We have had so much hay donated - six semi trailers have already gone, and another one is ready to go," Ms Hutley said.
"We've had people get on board offering their time to bale hay, and farmers have given us paddocks to bale."
"Frasers Transport has supplied trucks for the last load."
Ms Hutley said there was also a responsibility to spread awareness of the drought.
"We've had people calling from the top of Queensland to New South Wales, not just the Warwick area," she said.
"The stories we've been doing with ABC and Vision Radio, as well as Rural Weekly and Warwick Daily News are helping to make people aware."
Mrs Rasanen said the Weight Crunchers, a non-profit weight loss and support group, should have a box go out regularly for the next few weeks, with collection points at Oak Tree and Westside Shopping Centre.
"We would like to thank everyone on board for supporting us, and to Oak Tree Retirement Village for their facilities as a collection point," Ms Hutley said.
"We have been so encouraged by everyone's efforts."
