Well done to Dr John for long service in show chair
HORSEPOWER with Gerard Walsh
WELL done to Dr John Kiss for his many years as president of the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society.
He was first involved due to his love of campdrafting but in his role as overall president has overseen the growth of Australia's most famous rodeo and the Warwick Gold Cup and biggest campdrafting week in the nation.
The annual rodeo is now the venue for the APRA National Finals.
The society president leads a group of volunteers who put on two great events a year, the annual rodeo and the show.
I must say from a media perspective he was great to work with and appreciated we had a job to do as journalists as much as he had a role to run a successful event.
Under the leadership of DrJohn, the society has moved into a sounder financial position and there are projects in the wind like a new indoor arena above the cattle judging area.
He has called it a day in the top job to let acting president Gerard O'Leary take over with plenty of time to gear up for the rodeo.
I reckon the committee better watch Gerard, he might introduce polo on the showgrounds. Not sure how the ball runs along sand.
But seriously, one great volunteer has been succeeded by another with plenty of experience on committees, as a volunteer and rodeo sponsor.
I heard Dr John loves driving the John Deere tractor at the showgrounds, so like many retiring office bearers he has vowed to continue to work behind the scenes to support the society.
