Keats takes on the best

CLIFTON player Wendy Keats will do battle with the best players from across south-west Queensland in the champion of club champions group play-offs at Warwick East Bowls Club next week.

Keats won the Southern Downs Ladies District Bowls Association singles champion of club champions when she beat Stanthorpe player Val White in the final at Southern Cross.

Match chair Margaret Shingles said next week’s event would be the first group play off for Keats.

“Wendy said she is nervous but keen and excited to be in the group play off,” Shingles said.

In champion of club champion’s competitions, the winners at each club gets the chance to compete at district level.

In the pairs, Warwick East players, the two Margarets, skip Margaret Wright and Margaret Thompson, will represent the district after beating Stanthorpe pair Val White and Joan Potter in the final.

White was the only player to qualify for two of the district finals.

Warwick East team Venus Smith, Diane Derrick, Bev Cahill and Beverley Friend beat a four from Goondiwindi in the final at Southern Cross.

Friend substituted for Lyn Cope in the district finals.

It is expected players from Downs, Condamine and Maranoa/Warrego associations will be in Warwick to do battle with the best from the Southern Downs.

The first play at group level will be at Warwick East on Monday. A round robin will be played so each player/group will have two games on Monday and one on Tuesday.

The winners qualify for the state finals in September in the Brisbane Metropolitan area.
