Successful businessman faces prison after violent burglary

A SUCCESSFUL Western Downs business man, who held a knife to a woman's throat and threatened her before cutting her, will spend the next 18 months behind bars.

Benjamin Mark George Boodle has been sentenced in Goondiwindi District Court over a series of offences that took place in 2017 including burglary with violence while armed, grievous bodily harm and armed robbery.

During a previous court appearance in January 2018, a court heard how Boodle, a licensed pilot and manager of Boodles Concrete, flew 250km to stake out a Goondiwindi woman's home, held a knife to her throat and threatened her.

The woman, known to Boodle, was watching television in her home in October 2017 when she saw "a hand reach over her shoulder from behind", according to documents lodged in Brisbane Supreme Court for the man's bail application.

Boodle was later arrested in Chinchilla where he was charged with intentionally entering a dwelling while armed and using actual violence, unlawful wounding, and robbery while armed and using personal violence.

An orthopaedic surgeon stated during a previous court session that the female victim's injuries included tendon lacerations.

At a later hearing, on January 15, 2017, Justice Glenn Martin agreed to vary Boodle's bail conditions.

Boodle was originally ordered to report to police three times a week, however it was dropped to once a week after the court heard he ran a Chinchilla firm employing 36 people and argued that if he was not given bail these jobs could be at risk.

Boodle will serve 18 months in jail after he was handed a suspended sentence of two years and six months for burglary with violence while armed to be suspended after serving one year and six months, a suspended sentence of three years and two months for the grievous bodily harm charge to be suspended after serving one year and six months and one year imprisonment for the armed robbery charge.
