WHAT A CROC: Downs pub adds a bit of bite to menu

A TASTE of the top end has hopped onto the menu of an innovative Southern Downs pub.

Social media across the region has lit up this week after the Royal Hotel Leyburn announced they'd come up with a truly unique dish.

The Leyburn Feral Mixed Grill is the pub's snappy and exotic take on a counter meal favourite and features a crocodile sausage, a kangaroo kebab, a turkey leg, a crocodile kebab and a wild boar rasher served with a bush tomato and chook egg.

Pub owner Sam Toy said she hoped the idea would spark a bit of chat.

"We thought we might try something a little different to put us on the map, something to get tongues wagging,” she said.

"We're hoping somebody will be brave enough to come along and try it out.”

Mrs Toy said her and husband Shane had spent 15 years in Darwin before moving to take over the Royal Hotel.

"I was up there a few months ago and started thinking if we could something with crocodile,” she said.

"It's taken a few months to get it all together but it just grew from there and started adding more different items to it.

"We've always done a normal mixed grill, we just decided to mix that up a bit.”

The new item was put up on the menu board on Sunday, but as of yet, there have been no takers.

"It was a bit of a quiet day, so I put it up on Facebook as well,” she said.

"That's when it took off.

"We'd hoped it would spark a bit of chat and it's certainly done that.

"There's been heaps of comments on our Facebook page or people tagging others and wanting to come out and try it.

"So we're hoping we might sell a few this weekend, based on all of that.”

As for sourcing the interesting pieces that make up the meal, it hasn't been too much of a stretch.

"The crocodile comes from a crocodile farm in the territory,” Mrs Toy said.

"Kangaroo is readily available and the turkey we can get from the butcher.

"We were going to include camel as well, but that turned out to be a bit harder.”

There's a rumour the wild boar was actually tackled by Shane Toy during a fishing trip, but that is, as of yet, unfounded.

The pub is no stranger to thinking outside the box.

Also on the menu is a huge gastronomical challenge.

Consisting of a 1kg char-grilled rump steak, a mountain of chips and salad or vegies, the challenge is to down it all within half an hour and earn yourself two free schooners and a spot on the wall of fame.

Shane Toy said the challenge had been running for about three years.

"There's about 20 people on the board that have done it,” he said.

"Most people don't finish it, but then we don't make it easy for them.”

The record currently stands at seven minutes and 17 seconds.

For anyone wanting to try something a little different, a trip out the Royal Hotel Leyburn might be a good option.

As their Facebook posts suggests:

Check this extra special menu item out! A Feral Mixed Grill! Yes, that's right - roo, croc, turkey, wild boar! So SNAP to it (like a croc!), JUMP in your car (like a roo!), GOBBLE it down (like a turkey) and make a pig of yourself!
