Another Warwick cricketer debuts in Schaeffer Shield
CRICKET: Ryan Collins is the latest Warwick Cricket Association player to debut in the Schaeffer Shield competition.
The left-hander who opens with bat and ball for Wheatvale played for the Darling Downs and South West Country side in the second day of the competition in Ipswich.
Collins was joined in the team by fellow Warwick player Matt Elford from the Colts club and Chris Gillam from the Nobby area who was captain and wicketkeeper.
They were joined by players from Lockyer, Toowoomba and Charleville for trials as a forerunner to the selection of the South Queensland team to play North Queensland in a Queensland Country trial.
While Gillam has played for Queensland Country, it is still on the bucket list for Elford.
In its first carnival game, Darling Downs and South West played Sunshine Coast and was dismissed for 136.
Gillam batted at No.4 and made seven and Elford hit nine batting last.
Sunshine Coast scored 8-286, Elford finishing with 0-39 off six overs and Gillam took a catch.
In the games against Gold Coast, Elford took 4-43 off 10 overs as Gold Coast made 9-233 off 50 overs.
When rain ended play, Darling Downs and South West Country were 4-73 with Gillam not out 37 from 40 balls. Collins batted at Number 5 and scored 10.
"It was a great experience to play Schaeffer Shield in the same team as a player like Chris Gillam," Collins said.
He describes himself as a batsman who bowls so was in the right spot in the top five against Gold Coast.
Representative cricket on the Eastern Downs resumes on Sunday with Warwick away to Stanthorpe in two grades and Central Downs playing Lockyer in the Mitchell Shield.
