Wheatvale the 2013 premiers
WHEATVALE captain Neil Cantwell credited a running catch by Carly Cooper to dismiss Mark Steketee as a key moment of his side's grand final victory on Saturday at Slade Park.
Defending a total of 200 in A-grade, Neil opened the bowling from the northern end in the absence of regular opener Jack Breen. After taking 2-25 to be the best for Maryvale, Mark, an Australian under-19 paceman, opened the batting.
"Mark hit me for 10 runs off the first five balls and then skied a ball to mid-off. Carly had to run back 10m and had plenty of time to think about it but took the catch," Neil said.
Neil hit six fours in a top-scoring 40 but received great support from Chris Malone who was LBW to Mark Steketee for 28.
Neil paid tribute to the sportsmanship of Mark who slowed down when bowling to the students in his team.
"He is the fastest I have faced but you don't want students facing 130kmh," he said.
Chasing 200, Maryvale was 4-52 before Michael Bourke, 54, and cousin Kevin Bourke, 16, added 52 for the fifth wicket to take the score of 104 after 33 overs.
Hugh Wren took two wickets in the 34th over each side of drinks to finish with 4-29 off 9.4 overs.
Maryvale captain Jason Steketee said when his side lost a wicket, they didn't build a partnership.
"We quickly lost another one or two wickets," he said.
