IT WAS a very close decision but Wheatvale State School's clever yarn bombing techniques saw it dubbed the winner of this year's Jumpers and Jazz in July school tree competition yesterday.

It was closely followed by St Mary's Primary school in second and Murray's Bridge in third place.

This year's theme was Come Fly With Me and each of the eight schools involved interpreted the theme in a different way.

Wheatvale yarn bombed a tree in the school yard and decorated it with lots of cleverly decorated sticks, which all floated around in the breeze.

Wheatvale school principal Peter Cuskelly said all of his 60 students had played a part in the display.

"Big thanks must go to Susie Greenway who put in a lot of work with the tree and to all their students for their creative efforts," he said.

"It is a great community event and great to get involved in."

St Mary's drew inspiration from Roald Dahl's book James and the Giant Peach, recreating the peach being lifted by seagulls.

Murray's Bridge's display included hot air balloons made from real balloons and a range of birds hanging from the trees.
