Wheeling into city for the Midi-Smiddy Challenge

WITH smiles on their faces cyclists pedalled their way into the Rose City at the weekend to raise money for cancer research.

After leaving Toowoomba at 7am on Saturday morning and riding through towns including Pittsworth, Clifton and Allora, the group of more than 50 cyclists arrived in Warwick after 3pm as part of the fifth annual Midi-Smiddy Challenge.

The Midi-Smiddy Challenge began in 2007, when Mark Smoothy and two of his mates cycled from Brisbane to Townsville in honour of their friend Adam Smiddy, who passed away from melanoma.

"Adam had always talked about wanting to ride to Townsville," Mr Smoothy said.

"After he passed away two mates and I cycled unassisted with just backpacks to Townsville. That's how the journey began."

Each year the cyclists ride into Warwick and stay at the Horse and Jockey Hotel, with a goal of raising $100,000 for the Mater Foundation.

"Each year we get amazing individuals riding with us," he said.

Amongst the riders who braved the strong crosswinds in this year's challenge were first-timers the Geeves siblings.

Jess Geeves said her dad Chris was one of the first riders in the challenge in 2007.

"It's all about raising awareness for cancer research," the 16-year-old said.

Riding alongside their sister were 14-year-old twins Georgia and Jack Geeves.

The pair said this year they were finally old enough to ride.

"We've been involved for eight years as volunteers," Georgia said.

"I've been part of the road crew for the last three years," Jack said.

The cyclists stopped in the Rose City overnight for a community dinner at the Senior Citizens Centre, before leaving early on Sunday morning for the gruelling return trip to Brisbane.
