Whole lot of labour of love
HUNDREDS of hours and a whole lot of love have gone into the making of quilts which will be on show next weekend at the fifth annual Glenrose Airing of the Quilts.
The Airing of the Quilts is a display of handmade crafts as well as a cent sale, stalls and raffles.
It will be held at Glenrose Patchwork on Ogilvie Rd between 10am and 4pm on October 5 and 6, and all proceeds will go to supporting families in the Darling Downs and help breast cancer and prostate cancer nurses.
Glenrose Patchwork owner Glenis Pugliese said the annual quilting event coincides with breast and prostate cancer awareness months.
"We are a small group but we are very passionate," she said.
"We wanted the money to stay in the Downs to help local people."
Fellow quilting member Ros Robinson said the cause started when Mrs Pugliese found out she had cancer.
"It started with these wonderful ladies helping out," she said.
"When Glenis got it, I was shocked.
"She is younger than a lot of us."
The Airing of the Quilts has raised $35,000 in its four years, but the ladies are aiming for a total target of $50,000 this year.
"We would like more local people exhibiting their beautiful quilts," Mrs Robinson said.
"A lot of people don't put them in because they don't think they're good enough.
"But everyone has a different eye for what they like."
There will be Viewer's Choice prizes and wall hangings made by Warwick State High students on display.
On Saturday morning, Michelle's belly dancers will entertain the crowd, and Jenny's Line Dancers will perform on Sunday.
There will be hot and cold drinks, home-made goodies, sandwiches served all day as well as a sausage sizzle at lunch time.
The Airing of the Quilts brings people from far and wide, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Townsville and Northern NSW.
"True quilters will go anywhere that there is a good outing," Mrs Robinson said.
"It's a package deal; they enjoy seeing all the different fabrics."
More volunteers are also needed to help sell raffle tickets and assist on the day, call Glenis on 4661 7476.
