Wider roads needed as Warwick cyclists have 'nowhere to go'

SAFETY is constantly on the minds of Warwick cyclists as they ride around our busy streets.

They say most drivers are courteous, however, there are still isolated incidents in which cars drive too close for comfort and even hit riders.

Warwick cyclist Robert Partington said making the roads wider around Warwick would help improve safety.

"Give cyclists a place to ride on the shoulder,” he said.

"It gives us more room between the car and cyclist.”

Fellow rider John Creed agreed small road shoulders were an issue, as riders had nowhere to go.

"Road bikes have got a skinny tyre so a lot of the roads around here, I think the shoulder isn't big enough because the cyclists can't get off the road.”

Mr Partington said installing signs indicating cyclists use the road could help raise awareness.

Cyclist Laura Brazier said safety was a two-way street so all road users needed to make an effort.

"If all cyclists try to have empathy and understand how the motorists feel and motorists understand how cyclists feel,” she said.
