Wyverns win makes hockey history

WYVERNS beat Sunny 3-0 to win the Condamine Sports Club Hockey Sevens at Queens Park at the weekend.

The win was the first by a Warwick team in the annual carnival.

At the end of the round games, the Sunny team from the Sunshine Coast was on top of the table from Wyverns with Ipswich third and Saints fourth.

In the semi-finals, Sunny beat Saints 3-1 and Wyverns downed Ipswich 5-0.

In the final, Wyverns led 2-0 at halftime.

Dion Phillips scored two goals for Wyverns and Rob Pohlman one.

Mark Follett, of Wyverns, was player of the final.

Ipswich and Saints were joint third placegetters.

The Coasters team from the Sunshine Coast beat Warwick Wolves in the play off for fifth.

Carnival organiser Phil Rolfe said he hoped to increase the number of teams from six to 10 next year.

“We can handle up to 10 teams on the water-based synthetic; if we have more than 10 teams some games will be played on grass,” Rolfe said.

“All teams from the weekend have vowed to come back and we hope to get teams from Toowoomba and Brisbane next year.”

Rolfe said the inclusion of a Warwick team in the Toowoomba veteran’s competition this season would be a good chance to encourage more teams in 2010.

Warwick junior and senior fixtures start on Friday and Saturday.
