Winning jockey gets a kick out of Allora Cup
JOCKEY Bradley Appo experienced a painful post-script to his thrilling feature win aboard Gaelstorm ($15) in the Railway Hotel Allora Cup Benchmark 70 Handicap (1200m).
Appo continued his winning association with Gaelstorm and his Dalby trainer Gil Baker when the seven-year-old did best in a tight finish to edge out Eureka Dazzler ($13) by a half head.
Tailwind ($13) was a neck away third.
But Appo had his winning celebrations dampened when he was forced to hobble back to scale in pain with an injured right knee after being kicked by Gaelstorm while unsaddling him in the winner's stall.
Warwick trainer Garry Schwenke was happy to have his judgement proved wrong, but could still claim to be half-right after Cuban toughed out a dead-heat victory for him at Allman Park on Saturday.
Cuban ($6) kicked strongly in the home straight for jockey Damion McIntosh when challenged by Kingston Time ($2.40 fav) to share the spoils in the Sky Racing/Panasonic Studio Benchmark 75 Handicap (2000m) with the Armidale gelding.
Cross The Star ($4.40) was three lengths back third.
Schwenke went into Saturday's race down on confidence after Cuban had missed a planned run and vital track work going in.
"I thought I had her ready to win at the Gold Coast meeting that was washed out last week," Schwenke said.
"Then she was forced to miss a bit of work because of the rain and I thought she was going into today's race a little underdone.
"She also met a lot of these horses she's raced before badly at the weights."
