Winning team caps outstanding season in futsal

FUTSAL: Blackbirds scored a 6-2 win against Flowerboys in the competitive grade grand final in Warwick futsal on Thursday night at WIRAC.

The win was one of many this season, Blackbirds were only beaten once in the term 4 competition and only suffered two losses in a year which was divided into four term competitions.

Blackbirds player Will West said he expected the result to be closer.

"We had two games against Flowerboys in the season and each team had one win by a margin of one goal.” he said.

Flowerbirds scored first in the grand final before Tim Delaney scored three goals in the first half for the Blackbirds to lead 3-1.

After his side won its fourth premiership this season, West said the players combined well as they had played together for many years.

"Most of us played outdoor football (soccer) up to the under-16 grades, some played seniors for a while and team member Johnny Enosa still plays for the Warwick Wolves,” West said.

"Goalie Jimmy Osborn saved a lot of shots and Tim Delaney scored them on Wednesday night.”

Flowerboys player Dan King said after the loss that "we will be back again”.

"Their goalkeeper, Jimmy Osborn, saved a lot of our shots on goal,” King said.

The grand final in the social competition was played on Wednesday night and Haybales beat The Punters 4-1.

"We were a new team this season,” Haybales player Kate Hay said.

"I am optimistic we can put another team in next season but will lose some players due to university commitments.”

West encouraged new players and teams to contact WIRAC staff about joining up for the first season next year.

"The futsal competition lines up with school terms,” he said.
